Nellie and Arthur

Writer's picture: Reg MilesReg Miles

Hello everyone. Well it's been quite a while since I have posted in my blog. Sorry for the delay but I have been very busy writing, recording and gigging.

Nellie and Arthur is a brand new song that I have just written and recorded.

It is a rather tragic love story from 1916. The video for the song is here on the left.

In fact, I can tell you that Nellie and Arthur did exist and this is actually a true story.

Many years ago I remember Great Aunt Nellie. I recall she was a spritely 90 year old, outgoing and lots of fun. However deep down she had this secret, which she took with her when she passed.

Some years later I was researching the family history and discovered that she had been married twice. No one ever knew about her first marriage to Arthur in 1916, who was killed in the Somme on 15 September.

When she married again in the 1920s she did so as if she was a single woman, using her maiden name on the marriage certificate.

I chatted with her daughter, by then an old lady herself, about this. She told me that throughout her childhood there was a picture of a "rather dashing" WW1 soldier hanging down the stairs. "I thought it was just a nice picture. No one except Mum knew of it's significance."

We all think, quite rightly, of the hell the soldiers experienced in the trenches, but sometimes forget the trials and anguish of the people back home.

I have tried to be as accurate as I can with the telling of this story and hope that Nellie and Arthur have been reunited for ever.

Take care everyone.

Best wishes, Reg Miles
